Shadow (2019)

Reclaimed Cedar / India Ink

The legendary psychiatrist Mr. Carl Jung described the Shadow as any aspect of ourselves that has not seen the light of our consciousness. The nature of Shadow Work is often presented as uncovering the things we do not want to see in ourselves. An interesting consideration of the shadow is that it holds both good and bad things we suppress. This is coming from memory of my days at college studying Psychology. The sculpture is a reminder to myself that there is always something to uncover within, good or bad.

The use of cedar as a medium is special as it represents old growth. Old wisdom that we all hold within that is waiting to be tapped into. The India Ink is a play on our consciousness as we are blinded to our own Shadow. The ink hides the grain until the changing light reveals more of the story as time goes by. Are we willing to accept the invitation?
